Big Brother 7 (UK) is the seventh series of the UK version of Big Brother. It premiered on May 18, 2006 and concluded exactly three months later on August 18 when Pete Bennett was crowned the winner of the season, taking home the grand prize.

Housemate Nikki Grahame would later return to compete as a housemate on Ultimate Big Brother, where she became the runner-up of the season. Grace Adams-Short, Glyn Wise, and Pete would also return to participate in tasks during this season. Nikki and Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace would also later enter the house as "Time Warp Housemates", during Big Brother 16 (UK) , deemed as "Legends". Pete, Grace and Glyn would also briefly return to the house in the same season as a part of the "Let's do the Time Warp" shopping task on Day 37.

A year later, in 2016, Nikki would compete as a houseguest for her third time on Big Brother Canada 4, where she placed sixth overall.

Background[]

The fact that this season featured many housemates that had mental illnesses was highly controversial. These housemates include: Pete having Tourette's syndrome, Shahbaz deemed as mentally and emotionally unstable, Lea suffering from body dysmorphic disorder, Sam being shunned by her family, and Nikki suffering from anorexia in her past, leading to her being sectioned.

The House[]

The House for the seventh season of Big Brother (UK), featured a much smaller interior than that of its predecessor, with the living room being brought back into the house, with two glass doors that helped to separate it from the main floor of the house. The walls of the bedroom would change colour depending on the mood of the house-mates on eviction/live-nights. The bedroom for this season was found across from the living room, featuring a water-bed. The bathroom would also be accessed through this room and would feature a bath, shower and toilet.

The kitchen of the house was minimal and was found next to the garden of the house. The garden of the house featured a barbeque, pool and a seating area. There was also a bridge in the garden which was entitle "The Bridge to Nowhere" which lead to another seating area.

Twists[]

  • The Big Brotherhood: During the first week, housemates were selected to a fraternity where members got their suitcases and immunity. At the end of the week, the housemates not in "The Big Brotherhood" were nominated for eviction.
  • Golden Ticket Housemate: Following the Week 3 eviction, it was announced that the winner of the "Nestle Golden Ticket" would enter. 100 golden tickets were hidden in Kit Kat bars and after numerous background checks and evaluations, 35 of the ticket holders had a chance of entering the house. The housemates in the house randomly drew for one of the holders. The winner was Susie Verrico. She would later have the power to nominate the only housemates for eviction for Week 4.
  • Fake Eviction - The House Next Door: For the Week 6 eviction, Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace was fake evicted to the "House Next Door" where she was joined by five new housemates. On Day 46, Aisleyne was told to evict one housemate, unknowingly to her that they would go to the Main House. She chose Jayne Kitt. On Day 48, Aisleyne had to select two housemates to evict and once again unknowingly to her that they would go to the Main House. She chose Michael Cheshire and Jennie Corner. Finally, on Day 49, Aisleyne was told to evict one final housemate and this time, it would be a real eviction. She would evict Jonathan Leonard over Spiral Coroner.
  • Best Friends: For Week 10, the housemates selected a fellow housemate to be their "best friend" for the week. For nominations, each pair nominated one housemate for eviction. The housemates with the most nominations were nominated alongside with their best friend. The pair with the least votes to save would be evicted.
  • Final Pass: For Week 12, housemates participated in the "Big Brother Board Game" task. The winner would be safe from nominations and be given a spot in the final.
  • Previously Evicted Housemate Returning: On Day 84, Grace, Lea, Mikey, and Nikki were chosen by the public to re-enter the house between 10 previous housemates. The housemates lived in the "House Next Door" until Day 87 when the housemates in the Main House decided for Nikki to move back into the Main House.
  • Six Finalists: Returning from the previous celebrity series, six housemates would be left in the final instead of the normal 4.

The Golden Ticket Housemate[]

On the launch night, Davina McCall announced that that Big Brother had partnered with Nestlé to distribute 100 "Golden Tickets" in random Kit Kat bars throughout the country. In a twist similar to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of those golden tickets would let a member of the viewing public inside of the house. The Kit Kat bars went into circulation at 10:30pm on Launch Night. If any member of the viewing public wanted to enter the house, they had to have claimed their ticket to production by June 2, 2006.[1]

Producers told the Manchester Evening News, "This is a first for Big Brother. Nothing on this scale has ever been tried before in a reality show. We are always looking at new ways of trying to find brilliant housemates and the golden ticket feels like a genuinely exciting way to do so".

Golden Ticket Canidates

Throughout the three week promotion only 35 of the 100 tickets were claimed and eligible to be redeemed by members of the viewing public.[2] On Day 23, 34 of the claimed winners appeared live on Channel 4 to learn their fate. On the day of the live show, one potential housemate named "PJ" was slated in the promotion material to appear but dropped out last minute. The 34 different winners are listed below:

At the 10:00 eviction interview, the housemates gathered in the backyard and Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace pulled a ball at random to enter the house. The ball was number 14, Susie Verrico.

After she entered the house, many housemates and viewers accused the show of fixing the result. Various housemates stated on the show that they remembered seeing Susie during the audition process. The Advertising Standards Authority investigated the result and came to the conclusion that it did allow all potential candidates a chance to enter fairly.[3]

Channel 4 and Endemol ended up releasing a statement stating that and independent observer from the Electoral Reform Services had looked at all 34 individual balls before they were placed inside of the lottery machine. The draw that aired live on Channel 4 was slowed down and sent to the ASA to show the process and to show members of the viewing public that nothing was tampered with.

However, even though the ASA determined that it was fairly done, it criticized the show for not allowing the independent observer from the Electoral Reform Services to attend the draw. There were observers that watched via the live television broadcast, no observers were allowed to have contact with the housemates in the house.

The ASA warned that any future promotions similar to the Golden Ticket must be held with supervision of an independent observer. If no independent observer would be present, it may break the regulatory code.

The twist would go on to be used in Big Brother Australia 7 with Mars, Incorporated's Starburst as the "Big Brother Starburst Golden Key".[4]

Controversies[]

Housemate Selections[]

Season 7 was initially criticized for the selection of the initial sixteen housemates that could be viewed as vulnerable by the viewing public. These housemates included Pete with Tourette's,[5][6]Shahbaz had to have close monitoring after several emotional breakdowns[7], Lea was suffering from body dysmorphic disorder, Nikki had been suffering from anorexia[8], and Sam had admitted to being excluded by their family due to their sexuality and gender identity.

Speaking in Welsh[]

During the launch of the season, two Welsh contestants entered the house, Glyn Wise and Imogen Thomas. During one conversation, Glyn was warned by Big Brother for speaking to Imogen in the Welsh language, even though it was his first language.[9] It was deemed by Big Brother that speaking in the Welsh language could be deemed as a "code" since not all housemates could speak the language.

When Glyn was in the Diary Room, he stated, "But Welsh is British". In which Big Brother replied, "It's not English, and could be considered to be talking in code."

In response the Welsh Language Society reached out to Big Brother producers in outrage stating, "Are we moving towards a state where 'Big Brother' is watching over us and deciding what language we can and cannot speak?"

Producers stated, "Housemates are free to talk in any established language of their choosing. However, any discussion that is deemed to be against Big Brother rules may be punishable. Big Brother is multi-lingual and always listening."

As a response, Glyn and Imogen were able to continue to speak to one another in Welsh. If anytime the two used Welsh words, English subtitles would appear on the screen for non-Welsh native speakers to understand.

Return of Evicted Housemates[]
